Step 5 - Other Considerations

Noise

You want as quiet a generator set as you can get!. So be certain to check noise ratings before you buy. Equipment rated 66-74 dB(A)* is good (larger units will be slightly noisier-78 d(B)A is common). Any maker who does not list noise ratings probably isn't very proud of them, and should be avoided!

*Note about noise ratings: Noise is rated in decibels, abbreviated dB(A). All generator manufacturers measure noise levels at 23 ft. The actual noise level after installation depends on the particular site conditions. 74 dB(A) is typical of automobile traffic, quieter than a vacuum cleaner.

Safety

Don't compromise with safety! This means the following:

  • Don't install anything you are not qualified to install. Hire a licensed electrician or licensed electrical contractor. See our FAQ page for more information on this topic.

  • Don't buy a gasoline set! Don't buy a gasoline set! Don't buy ...

  • Have your equipment serviced by professionals.

Installation

Surprisingly, the installation steps for home generator sets aren't complicated.
You could even do the work yourself, providing:

  • You receive an excellent manual with the equipment

  • You feel comfortable with the mechanical, electrical & gas connection aspects of the job.

  • You can arrange for the building permit yourself.

If you don't feel comfortable doing the installation work yourself, hire a qualified, licensed electrician or licensed electrical contractor to do it for you.

Indoor Installations

Most home generator sets can be installed in a garage or other indoor location. Care must be taken to ensure the equipment has enough ventilation, the exhaust system is proper and safely installed and there is enough room around the equipment for maintenance and repair. Work with your installer on these issues.
